Sofya Lansere played in the qualifiers for the main draw of the Palermo Open but she was beaten in her second match. Due to Lucrezia Stefanini pulling out before her match against Olga Danilovic, Lansere was given a chance to replace her in the main draw as a lucky loser.
She actually took the first set against Danilov who struggled in the heat and retired after the first set. That allowed the Russian to advance to the second round even if she already lost in the qualifiers.
It’s going to be a tough prospect for her as she’s facing a very strong player, a clay specialist who play her best tennis on the surface.
Lansere herself doesn’t have a good record on clay being 3-10 this year so this unlikely scenario doesn’t seem likely to continue. It’s been a solid year overall for her with a 26-21 record.

Sherif Barely Pulls Through
Mayar Sherif was facing a really solid player in Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The 20-year-old Spanish player has had a fairly solid year so far and is generally best on clay. She proved a tough challenge for Sherif who is generally one of the better players on the surface.
The win came after three sets and a lot of fighting with the stamina of Sherif proving very crucial in the end. Europe is currently experiencing a heatwave and the Sicily is not spared in that regard. Matches begin late and are played in very warm conditions which isn’t a huge problem for Sherif who is from Egypt.
She’s had a good year overall with 26 wins and only 16 losses as the majority of her wins came on clay. She’s 20-6 on that surface and is going to be a huge favourite in this one.
She’s the better player, far better equipped for these conditions and favours the surface more.

To me, this is a no-brainer as Sherif should win and I expect it to come easily in two sets.
