Anna Karolina Schmiedlova v Claire Liu Head to Head
They have faced off once before this and that came earlier this year at the Indian Wells Open. Liu had won that opening round match.

After having dispatched Polina Kudermetova 6-2, 6-0 in her opener, Schmiedlova did not have as easy a time as she would have liked against the 11/10 underdog Tamara Korpatsch in the second round.
Schmiedlova fell behind when she lost the first set in that match before scooping home the match and sealing her quarterfinal berth with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory in the end.
In a match that went on for nearly two and a half hours, Schmiedlova lost her serve on three occasions including when she was broken in the very first game of the decider.
Korpatsch had a chance to go 2-0 up in the decider but soon found herself 0-40 down before Schmiedlova broke her off the third chance she got. From that point onward the traffic flowed just one way and into Schmiedlova’s favour as she broke again in the sixth game before wrapping things up.
Can the Slovak now make it three in three in her second successive tournament on clay after having reached the fourth round at the French Open as well?

Liu Shocks Putintseva
It was a straight-set win for Liu in the end but not before the 1/2 favourite Yulia Putintseva gave her a run for her money in the second set.
Liu needed two hours and 14 minutes to get past Putintseva 6-3, 7-6 (8) to make the quarterfinal for the second week in a row. She had earlier entered the last eight stage of a WTA 125 tournament in Bastad last week.
Having shrugged off two breaks of serves in the first set to clinch the lead with three of her own, Liu then came back from being 0-5 and three set-points down in the second set to win six games in a row and serve for the match at 6-5.
She was unable to sustain that momentum and in the tie-breaker than followed faced two more set-points. Liu saved both of them before sealing her last eight berth off the third match-point she got.
Liu will now hope she has enough steam left to overcome her Slovak opponent too.
Schmiedlova v Liu Prediction and Tip
Not much to choose between these two players as far as their rankings go and not much according to the bookmakers too. Expecting a thriller here that goes to the third.
