After an excellent opening set in her second round match against Astra Sharma on Wednesday, Kaja Juvan threw away a 1-3 lead in the second set, allowing Sharam to comeback and tie the match at 1-set apiece.

The Slovenian, however, regrouped and found her winning touch in the final set as she won the last four games in a row to complete a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory and reach her first tour level quarterfinal of the year.

The 22-year-old Juvan, who had peaked to a career high of no. 58 last June, improved her season record to 21-13 and she is now 11-5 on clay in 2023, having mostly played in either qualifying or lower level tournaments.

Ranked no. 169th in the world, Juvan is playing as a qualifier in the tournament. She had made it to the main draw with a straight sets win over Jessie Aney and a three-set win over Valeriya Strakhova respectively.

In the first round, Juvan had beaten Kristína Kučová 7-5, 6-2.

Facing Juvan in the last eight stage will be Russia’s Maria Timofeeva, who trounced compatriot Diana Shnaider 6-1, 6-1 in the second round on Thursday to reach her maiden tour level quarterfinal.

The 19-year-old had registered her first WTA win in the first round against Daria Saville on Tuesday and she continued that form on Thursday, demolishing  Schnaider in under an hour.

Timofeeva saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 6 of 7 to beat the world no. 110.

The Russian is playing in the tournament as a lucky loser . She had begun her qualifying rounds with a straight sets win over Ulrikke Eikeri but fell in the second qualifying round to Anna Siskova.

Timofeeva still found a spot as a lucky loser and she has made the most of the opportunity provided. She is 25-15 across levels, and will aim to reach a maiden WTA semifinal on Friday.
