Podoroska Swats Aside Avanesyan

Nadia Podoroska eased into her first WTA semifinal since Chennai, last September.

The Argentine, a former French Open semifinalist, has looked in terrific form this week, following up her commanding 6-3, 6-0 win over Anna Siskova with another routine victory in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Podoroska took apart Avanesyan 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 24 minutes. She began the match in the ascendancy, breaking her opponent thrice with some lovely variation and attacking intent.

Although Avanesyan got on the board by breaking Podoroska, she was immediately broke again to cede the opening set.

With a set in the bag, Podoroska began to swing freely in the second set, and even allowing some margin for error, tallying four double faults in the set.

But it was business as usual for the World No. 80 who secured two breaks of serve in the second and serve to 15 to close out victory.

A Debut to Remember for Timofeeva

Maria Timofeeva’s WTA main draw debut was through fortuitous circumstances, getting in as a lucky loser after losing the second round of qualifying to Anna Siskova in a third-set tiebreak.

But what was initially a setback has turned into a dream week for the 19-year-old Timofeeva who has punched her ticket into her first WTA semifinal in Budapest.

Among her list of victims: Daria Saville, Diana Shnaider, and more recently former World No. 58 Kaja Juvan who she defeated 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 36 minutes, just in time before rain halted play in the other quarterfinal.

Timofeeva has some incredible footspeed around the court, and her ability to pull off some spectacular drop shots while in defense completely took Juvan by surprise. Most of the time, Timofeeva utilized her beautiful backhand slice to neutralize pace and vary the bounce in her return.

She was rewarded handsomely, breaking Juvan four times in the match, while at the same time saving an astonishing 10 of 12 break points on her own serve.

Podoroska v Timofeeva Prediction and Tip

Timofeeva’s skillset defies her age. This has been a sensational run by the 19-year-old. But Podoroska is clearly a touch or two above the young Russian and with her vast experience, she’s got a more impressive shotmaking ability. We like the Argentine to end the lucky loser’s run.
