Yulia Putintseva v Jule Niemeier Preview

Head-to-Head: They played once before and Niemeier won that match (2022 US Open).

Yulia Putintseva defeated Elsa Jacquemot in the first round 6-2 6-4 showing a high level of comfortability in Hamburg. She’s always played her best tennis on clay and she’s 12-7 on the surface this year. It’s been a pretty solid year so far for her though her form has been somewhat shaky lately.

Niemeier is a really strong player herself who has had a couple of good runs at Grand Slams. That alone shows you how strong she can play but she also tends to go up and down quite a bit. Clay has been an excellent surface for her though not this year with a 5-7 record.  She beat Ella Seidel 7-6(5) 1-6 6-3 in the first round.

Putintseva is the likelier winner because she can absorb the power shots of Niemeier pretty well and moves a bit better on clay. It’s going to be pretty close though so keep that in mind.

Putintseva v Niemeier Tip

Putintseva to win: 4/6

Tamara Korpatsch v Daria Saville Preview

Head-to-Head: This will be their first meeting.

Tamara Korpatsch made a winning start by beating Maria Carle 3-6 6-2 6-1 in the first round which is a pretty good comeback. She’s always played her best tennis on clay though she can play well on all other surfaces.

The year overall hasn’t been very good though she’s performed decent enough on clay with an 11-9 score. The form has been bad lately.

Daria Saville didn’t play for much of this year due to a knee injury she sustained in Tokyo last year.

The Australian returned with a pretty decent level posting a 4-3 record so far. Clay has been a decent surface for her and she backed it up with an impressive 6-0 7-6(3) win over Jasmine Paolini.

Saville is the more talented player and even on clay, she should have the upper edge. The odds are pretty even but I like the tennis of Saville more and she’s looked fairly decent since her return. I do expect her to win the match.

Korpatsch v Saville Tip

Saville to win: 1/1

Nadia Podoroska v Arantxa Rus Preview

Head-to-Head: They played two times so far and each has one win. The most recent one last year was won by Podoroska.

Nadia Podoroska is a fabulous clay player and while she’s yet to hit the peak from a few years ago when she made the Roland Garros semi-final the Argentinian is still playing solid tennis. Her record on clay this year proves that as it stands at 19-11. She’s an aggressive player and showed that against Tomova in the first round 6-1 7-5.

Arantxa Rus has been a very good player for many years. She’s an experienced veteran who knows how to play on clay and has played really well on the surface. She is 36-7 on the year and is in spectacular form winning a lot of matches lately.

It’s a close one which could go either way but I do favour the style of play by Podoroska in this matchup. Rus could technically blow her off the court with her power but I think the Argentinian will manage it. She’s the underdog but I think it’s worth a try. The over might be a safer option though.

Podoroska v Rus Tip

Over 20,5 games: 5/6

Eva Lys v Panna Udvardy Preview

Head-to-Head: This will be their first meeting.

Panna Udvardy overcame a pretty tough challenge in round one by beating Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 3-6 6-3 6-1. It was a pretty big comeback win for the Hungarian who has been playing a really solid game on clay for a while.

She’s only 9-8 on the surface but 235-146 overall in her career and that shows just how good she can be on this surface. The form lately hasn’t been that great as she’s quite beatable. Eva Lys is from Hamburg and loves playing at the event.

She’s a rising player with a bright future though hasn’t had a strong year so far. Generally good on clay she has a 4-9 score so far. The win though was utterly impressive as she took down Mayar Sherif a note clay expert 6-1 6-1.

It’s a rather simple one here. I back Lys because she was spectacular in round one and is from Hamburg. Sounds like a no-brainer.

Lys v Udvardy Tip

Lys to win the match: 5/6
