Miami Masters 2019: Roger Federer Makes it Title Number 101

The ATP tour has been suspended for six weeks

Roger Federer became the first player, men’s or women’s, to win a second title of the year after he clinched the 2019 Miami Masters on Sunday evening.

The Swiss maestro defeated John Isner 6-1, 6-4 to follow up his title at Dubai earlier this year.

Isner stood no match to Federer in the first set in which he was broken three times including in the very first game of the encounter. And while he began well in the second, an injury to his foot looked to have taken the fizz out of his fightback.

Things went to serve for the first nine games before Isner began to feel the effects of what he would later describe as a feeling like it’s the stress fracture of his foot. Serving to stay in the match, he was broken in the 10th game to go down in straight sets.

Federer’s only loss of set came in his very first match, in round two against Radu Albot, who won the first set of that encounter. Since then, Federer’s won all sets, including a bagel against Kevin Anderson.

The win ensured that at the end of the first quarter of the year, Federer is leading the Top of the ATP Race with 2280 points, to be closely followed by Australian Open Novak Djokovic’s 2225.

The remaining players on that ladder include Rafael Nadal with 1605, Stefanos Tsitsipas on1460 and Indian Wells Masters winner Dominic Thiem with 1145.
