Bertens, in Her First Official Game since the French Open

Former top 10 player Kiki Bertens missed the start of the 2021 season owing to surgery on her Achilles tendon.

It has been a problem that plagued the Dutchwoman for most of the previous year, prompting her to take serious steps to address the issue.

Last season, she started well with a fourth-round run in the Australian Open and a winning run in the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy. However, the onset of clay season after a long gap on the tour saw a sharp drop in her form. Bertens lost her opening round matches in the Italian Open and Strasbourg Open.

At the Roland Garros, she started as the No. 5 seed and reached the fourth round where she lost to Martina Trevisan. In the very same tournament, Bertens beat Sara Errani in the second round and left the court in a wheelchair citing fitness issues.

Bertens underwent the surgery in late October and since then, has spent the time recuperating.

The 29-year-old is definitely one of the most prolific players on the tour. She has 10 singles titles to her name, including the Madrid Open and Cincinnati Open. With that, she has also got a pretty healthy record against many top 10 players.

Ostapenko, in with a Lacklustre Start

The 23-year-old Ostapenko, who was once pegged as a prodigy, is on the cusp of fading away from the tour. The 2017 French Open champion hasn’t won a singles title on the tour since the 2019 Luxembourg Open.

Ostapenko spent most of the last season struggling heavily with her form as well and consequently, she dropped down in the rankings. Currently ranked World No. 49, she is heading in this game after a first-round defeat in the Australian Open to Karolina Muchova.

Before that, she featured in the Gippsland Trophy but lost in the third round to Elina Svitolina.

Among her most noticeable performances from the previous season, we have the Qatar Open and French Open, where she reached the third round.

Bertens vs Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Bertens is out of touch but she has an opportunity here to start with a good win, thanks to Ostapenko’s recent struggles with her form. Conversely, the Latvian can look to upset her opponent by taking advantage of her absence on the tour.

Expect a tight finish with three sets in the offering.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
