Roger Federer v Steve Johnson Head to Head

Number three seed Swiss maestro Roger Federer plays American veteran Steve Johnson in the opening round of the 2020 Australian Open.

The two players have met twice with Federer winning both in straight sets. Their last meeting was at Indian Wells in 2017.

Federer Looking for Routine Opener

Six-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer  begins yet another Australian Open campaign in Melbourne this week.

Winner of the 2017 and 2018 Australian Opens, the Swiss did not win any majors in 2019 and will look to correct that statistic ideally as early as the Australian Open for himself.

Despite not winning any majors in 2019, Federer maintained consistent form through the year winning four ATP titles including the Miami Masters 1000, and was a finalist at Wimbledon where he even had two championship points on his serve before succumbing to Novak Djokovic in an iconic final.

After bowing out of the ATP Year End Finals in the semi-finals to eventual champion Stefanos Tsitsipas, Federer has not had any competitive match practice, with him choosing to opt out of the inaugural ATP Cup last week.

The Swiss has alluded to how he has practiced hard and felt good in the off-season and says that he is raring to go.

Federer will look for a routine win against American veteran Steve Johnson in their first round encounter.

Can Johnson Restore Old Form and Challenge Federer?

Holder of four ATP titles, American Steve Johnson was once ranked just outside the top 20 in the world, in 2016.

In 2017, Johnson lost his coach and father tragically and has never been the same player again.

After a break Johnson returned to the tour, and although he won the title on the clay at the Houston ATP 250 and has put up spirited performances against recognized players on the hard courts, he has not managed to reach the levels of consistency he was once at.

2019 saw several early round losses and disappointing form and Johnson restored to the ATP Challenger circuit around the time of the Asian swing in October 2019.

Currently ranked outside the top 80 in the world, Johnson will be hoping for a turnaround of fortunes in 2020 and will look to put up a spirited fight against Roger Federer in their opener.

Roger Federer v Steve Johnson Predictions & Tips

While Johnson has the skills to trouble the best on the hard courts, it is difficult to see how confident he can be coming out in a match of this stature given his recent form. What remains to be seen is how rusty Federer is with no competitive play in two months and how long it takes him to get into his rhythm.

It may be a nervous and rusty Federer at the onset, but it should only take him a few games to get this act together.

Expect the Swiss maestro to win in straight sets.
