Stefanos Tsitsipas v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 21-year-old Greek, and the Italian, six years his senior, ranked 88 places below him in the world.

Can Tsitsipas Control His Temperament?

Having won first the NextGen ATP Finals and then the senior ATP Finals in successive years, many experts in the game have tipped Tsitsipas as a future Grand Slam winner.

However, although he has begun to beat some of the players above him in the rankings on a regular basis, including Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, there must still be doubts about his ability to put together a string of results over a two week period.

One problem area for the 21 year old is composure – he has a tendency to lose his cool, as shown in his recent ATP Cup match with Nick Kyrgios, hardly a paragon of virtue on court himself.

After making an unforced error, Tsitsipas smashed his racquet, in the process injuring his father, who was the coach of the team, and earning a reprimand from his mother who was sat in the stand. He will need to control himself if he is to mount a serious challenge in Melbourne.

Caruso, an Italian Clay Court Player

Caruso, currently ranked 94 in the world, has never won a senior ATP title, although he has been in three Challenger finals, winning two of them, most recently in Barcelona last October.

However, the fact that all three of those finals have been on clay indicates where the strength of his game lies. That is underlined by his run to the third round of the French Open last June – the only time he has ever won matches at a Grand Slam event.

He has already played two tournaments this year, starting in Doha, where he was beaten by the Frenchman Gregoire Barrere in the first round, He then moved on to the qualifying competition in Adelaide, where he first beat the local player Marc Pulman, before losing to the Argentine Federico Delbonis.

However, he still earned a place in the main draw there as a lucky loser, but was beaten by the German Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Salvatore Caruso Predictions & Tips

Tsitsipas is the overwhelming favourite to advance against a match against a man who has never won a Grand Slam match that has not been played on clay. There will be much tougher challenges to come for the Greek, but the Italian should pose him few problems.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 1/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
