Sam Querrey v Tennys Sandgren Head to Head

There has been just one previous meeting between the two, with Querrey beating Sandgren in the fourth round of Wimbledon last year.

Querrey Sees Off Berankis

Having knocked out 25th-seed Borna Coric in the first round in straight sets, Sam Querrey got another good win under his belt on Wednesday, defeating Ricardas Berankis 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Australian Open.

One of the best servers of the game, Querrey served 26 aces in the second round to maintain a perfect record against the Lithuanian, improving to 3-0 head-to-head.

Playing his 14th consecutive Australian Open, the 32-year-old Querrey has reached the third round on five previous occasions but has never featured among the last 16. Last year, he was sent packing by France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round.

When it comes to majors, Querrey has been most productive on grass reaching the Wimbledon semifinals in 2017 apart from appearing in the quarterfinals in 2016 and 2019. He also made it to the last eight at the U.S. Open in 2017, which was probably the best season of his career that also included two titles.

The 2019 Eastborne International finalist who has a 3-1 singles record this year will be aiming to break the third round jinx in Melbourne as he takes on compatriot Sandgren on Friday.

Sandgren Coming off a Stunning Win over Berrettini

Wednesday witnessed two unseeded Americans stun two highly rated seeded opponents in exactly the same fashion. While Tommy Paul saw off 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov in a tough five-setter that saw the American take a two-set lead before having to see off a late charge from the Bulgarian, Tenny Sandgren took exactly the same route in knocking out eighth seed Matteo Berrettini.

In a match that lasted three hours and 23 minutes, Sandgren raced into a two-set lead before allowing Berrettini to come back into the contest and forcing the decider. The American, however, held nerves to clinch the second round contest 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, 7-5.

The 28-year-old Sandgren, who beat Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti in straight sets in the first round, is playing in the main draw of the Australian Open for the third time, having reached the quarterfinals on his main draw debut in 2018. That year, as well, he defeated a top 10 player in the second round, beating No. 9 Stan Wawrinka. His journey to the last eight stage also included a five-set win over No. 5 Dominic Thiem.

In 2019, Sandgren lost in the first round to Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.

Coming off a year that wasn’t too encouraging except a Challenger final and a fourth round appearance at Wimbledon, Sandgren will be buoyed by the fact that 2020 has a similar feel to 2018 and he would like to replicate his exploits from two years ago.
