Borna Coric v Juan Ignacio Londero Head to Head

This will be the third time that the pair will be facing each other in a competitive match. Coric won both the prior meetings in Brazil last year and at Barranquilla challenger back in 2015. But both of those victories were on the clay courts.

Coric Makes a Convincing Start after Controversial Lead-up

When the 23-year-old Croatian reached the semi-finals at Rio de Janeiro back in February he would have hoped that the next few months would have been dominated by what he did on the field rather than off it. But the season suspension followed and he was in the news for all sorts of off the field issues.

Firstly, he was one of the players who was found Covid positive during the infamous Adria Tour. After that, he was involved in a social media spat with Nick Kyrgios of Australia. Kyrgios had criticised players for participating in the Adria Tour which Coric did not take too kindly.

His form ever since he recovered from the virus and started playing again was patchy and lacked any sort of rhythm.

He played four matches at the Eastern European Championship exhibition and lost three of them. Last week at Cincinnati, he did win his first-round match against Benoit Paire but the Frenchman had to retire after the first set. Coric lost in straight sets in the second round to David Goffin.

It was, therefore, important for him to start off well this week in New York and he did. Coric won a hard-fought first set against Pablo Andujar of Spain before easily winning the other two sets to wrap up the match.

Rare Hard Court Win for Londero

The last time Londero won a main draw match at an ATP Hard Court event was way back in the first round of last year’s US Open. That is how rare it is for the 27-year-old Argentine to play and win on the surface. Since then he was on a nine-match losing streak at main draws at hard courts which he finally broke after a straight-set win over Donskoy Evgeny.

Londero has had a decent season so far with a semi-final appearance at Buenos Aires. Although he could not defend his maiden title at Cordoba this year but he did reach the last eight there too. He will take confidence from that clay court run going into the delayed French Open later this month.

With another win here in New York, he would achieve his best-ever run at the US Open and will be closer to surpassing his highest ever ranking of 50.

Borna Coric v Juan Ignacio Londero Prediction & Tip

Coric will fancy his chances against the clay-court specialist, Londero. The Croatian looked in fine form in the first round. Another straight-set win will do his confidence a world of good. Even though Argentine did produce a fine performance himself, it is unlikely that he will cause many problems to Coric.

Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
