Petra Martic v Kateryna Bondarenko Head to Head

Having played each other twice on the WTA circuit and once at the ITF level, Bondarenko leads the head to head 2-1. Bonarenko’s first win came at the Macon ITF tournament while the second was in the qualifying rounds of the San Jose Open. In the only match played in the main draw of a WTA event, Martic crushed her opponent in straight sets to move into the second round of the 2017 French Open.

Martic Made to Stretch

Martic hadn’t played a single exhibition match during the pandemic break and even in the lead-up to the US Open, participated in two clay-court tournaments. Rustiness was always going to be a concern.

And that showed up in her first round match against Tereza Martincova, where she was stretched to three sets, needing to come back from a set down to win the match.

In an encounter lasting nearly two and a half hours, Martic won 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to set up this meeting with Bondarenko. The Croat was a back down early in the first set, regained control to tie it at 3-3 but serving to stay in the set at 5-6, she faced three break-points. Martic saved two but dropped the set off the third.

Martic retaliated by racing off to a 4-0 lead in the second before eventually winning it 6-2, but then dropped serve early in the third set to trail Martincova 3-1. Martic broke back but struggled to hold her serve, saving a plethora of break-points before levelling things off at 3-3. The Croat then got a crucial break of serve after that and served out to win it.

Bondarenko Aiming to Winning Two Matches in a Row

The last time Bondarenko won a couple of matches in a row came at the start of the year in Shenzhen where she reached the quarterfinal. Since then, however, a first round loss at the Australian Open and Hua Hin Open, and back to back second round defeats at Monterrey and Acapulco followed.

The 34-year-old Ukrainian, who was once ranked 29th in the world, did not play in a single exhibition tournament during the pandemic break and returned at the Lexington Open only to lose her qualifier there. Another qualifying defeat at the Cincinnati Open followed but an easy first round match against Alexandra Kiick is what she needed here.

And while she dropped a set to Kiick, Bondarenko came back strongly to win the next two to move into the second round – her first major main draw win since the 2018 French Open.

Petra Martic v Kateryna Bondarenko Prediction & Tip

Martic shouldn’t have too many worries here against a player who is ranked outside the top 300 and should make it through to the third round in straight sets.

Tip: Martic to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
