Hurkacz Hoping For Consecutive Clinical Wins

Poland’s Next Gen rising star Hubert Hurkacz had a breakthrough season in 2019, qualifying for the third round at Wimbledon, moving into the top 50 of the ATP rankings and winning his first ATP title on the hard courts of Winston Salem.

2020 got off to a strong start for Hurkacz, who had a good outing at the ATP Cup, winning all his singles matches against Dominic Thiem, Diego Schwartzman and Borna Coric respectively.

He followed the ATP Cup with a semi-final showing at the ASB Classic in Auckland, but lost early at the Australian Open to Aussie John Milman. Hurkacz was drawn against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the Rotterdam opener and after being up a set and a break, he was unable to drive home the early advantage.

Hurkacz reached a career high ranking of 28, but had an indifferent February on the indoor and hard courts, with several early round losses. The Pole lost early last week at the Western & Southern Open to big serving American John Isner and came in to the US Open, a little short of match confidence.

Hurkacz registered a clinical opening round win at the US Open against German Peter Gojowczyk and will hope to continue that form into the second round.

Marathon Opener For Fokina

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina had a breakthrough 2019, winning two ATP Challenger titles. He topped this with a win against Gael Monfils at the Estoril ATP 250 to make the semi-finals.

Incidentally, this tournament also marked his first ever tour level win. Fokina did well to qualify for the year end Next Gen ATP Finals at Milan and also broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings by year-end.

Winning his first Grand Slam match at the Australian Open, the Spaniard would have hoped to equal and better that at the US Open.  Fokina was involved in a five-setter opener against Austrian Dennis Novak, where he prevailed, winning the decider 6-0. It remains to be seen how well he recovers ahead of his next round match on Wednesday.

Hubert Hurkacz v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Prediction & Tip

A battle between two promising players is on the cards, both who are earmarked for greater things ahead. While Fokina is still to make a footing for himself, Hurkacz is more established, experienced and confident.

Expect some good exchange of points, but the Spaniard will be tired after his five-setter opener, and the more well-rounded Hurkacz should prevail in straight sets.

Tip: Hurkacz to win in three sets: 6/5 (bet365)
