Jan-Lennard Struff v Michael Mmoh Head to Head

The pair have met once before in the exhibition Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia last December, Struff winning in straight sets.

Struff Makes Comfortable Start to US Open Campaign

Struff, the German number two, has never won a senior ATP singles titles, although he has three doubles successes to his name with a variety of partners, most recently the Moselle Open which he won last September with the Swede Robert Lindstedt. He was a beaten finalist in the doubles in Marseilles in February.

His record in Grand Slams is modest – the best he has managed in any of them is a fourth-round appearance in Paris last year, and he subsequently got to the third-round stage at both Wimbledon and here in New York.

However, he is now at a career high world ranking of 29, and is seeded for the first time here at the US Open.

Struff began his campaign with a comfortable straight sets victory over Pedro Martinez of Spain on Monday. Struff breezed through the first set which he took to love in just 23 minutes.

He lost his serve early in the second set, but bounced back with two breaks of his own to establish a clear lead. And the third was almost a carbon copy of the second, with the extra break enabling him to close out the match.

In the end the decisive factor was the Struff serve – he won 88% of points on first-serve, and produced 13 aces to his opponent’s three.

Mmoh Achieves Second Grand Slam Match Win

22-year-old Mmoh was once ranked second in the world as a junior, but, since turning pro in 2016, he has spent the majority of his time on the Challenger tour, where he has won 9 titles, the most recent of which came on Knoxville Lat November.

The first time he qualified for the main draw in a Grand Slam was at Melbourne in 2019, but he lost in the first round. He went one better in New York last year, beating Pablo Andujar in straight sets, before going out at the second-round stage.

And now he has another Grand Slam win to add to his collection after beating an out-of-form Joao Sousa of Portugal, the world number 65, in four sets on Monday.

The first set was error-strewn, but Mmoh claimed it with three service breaks to one. The second was tighter, with a solitary break in the 12th game enough to give Mmoh a two-set advantage. Sousa hit back to claim the third, but any hopes of a Portuguese comeback were ended as he dropped his serve twice more in the fourth allowing Mmoh to win with relative ease.

The match with Struff will be one of the biggest of his career to date.

Struff cruised through his first round in New York and can be expected to have a relatively comfortable passage to the third round against a man with very little experience at this level.
