Wozniacki Makes Retirement U-Turn

Caroline Wozniacki shocked the tennis world in late June, announcing on Vogue magazine she would be coming out of retirement to play at the North American hard-court swing.

Wozniacki enjoyed a glorious 15-year career in her first stint, ranked No. 1 for 71 weeks (10th in the list of most weeks at No.1), and put capstone to her illustrious career by winning the 2018 Australian Open against all the odds.

Her retirement was just as eyebrow-raising as her imminent return. Wozniacki retired from tennis back in 2020, citing rheumatoid arthritis as a key driver in making that decision.

In the time spent away from the tennis courts, Wozniacki had two children, and during a family get-together at the beach, she consulted her husband David Lee, a retired NBA player, about a potential return.

Wozniacki already knew in her mind, she wanted to experience the thrill and the adrenaline rush while smacking the tennis ball again, and she got the assurance she wanted to hear from her husband, and made up her mind.

On Tuesday, the Dane will play her first professional match since the 2020 Australian Open.

Birrell Imperious in Qualifying

Australia’s Kimberly Birrell backed up her recent upturn in results on the ITF circuit by qualifying for the Canadian Open for the first time.

Birrell has been one of the most consistent players on the ITF level this season, winning a couple of titles, one a W25, and the other a W60.

Birrell also produced a great run at the Merida 250 earlier this season where she qualified for the tournament and attained a quarterfinal finish.

Her form in Montreal qualifying wasn’t at all surprising. She had won seven of her past nine matches, a run which saw her clinch the W25 tournament in Cantanhede in Portugal last month.

She won her first match in qualifying against compatriot Daria Saville 6-3, 6-4, and then proceeded to knock out World No. 60 Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-4 for a main draw spot.
