Since reaching the final of the Eastbourne International, Kasatkina has had to endure a bit of a letdown in her form and a slight drop in her rankings.
Which is why, while she was a favourite coming into her opener here against Elise Mertens, there were a few question-marks over the ease with which she would come through. As it turned out, Kasatkina needed an hour and 42 minutes alright but she improved as the encounter went on and registered a straight-set win.
Kasatkina lost her serve in the fifth game, allowing Mertens to go 4-2 up but that’s when her turnaround also came.
In fact from that point onward, the Russian won 10 of the next 12 games, including nine in a row that gave her a 5-0 lead in the second set. Mertens held on to her serve and then broke Kasatkina but the world number 14 broke right back to finish off the encounter.
This win followed a second round exit for Kasatkina at the Washington Open. She would like to go one better this time around.

Blinkova Scrapes Past Zhang
Shuai Zhang is in such a bad rut these days that it’s almost difficult to watch her discomfiture. Her appalling form was also the reason why Blinkova had gone into their encounter as a 2/5 favourite but things did not work out that easily for the Russian.
In fact, when 37 minutes into the encounter Zhang had broken Blinkova twice on her way to clinching the opening set, hopes of a turnaround for the Chinese player looked to be making rounds.
Blinkova quelled those quickly though.
She broke Zhang immediately in the second set and then wrapped up the equaliser with a second break of serve in the eighth game. She faced just one break-point of her own in this period.
In the decider, Blinkova lost her serve in the very first game but then broke right back. She then went 4-2 up with a second break and the two traded breaks after that too to leave Blinkova serving for the match.
An easy hold followed, giving Blinkova her first career win at this competition.
Things could get a lot tougher against Kasatkina.
