Carlos Alcaraz v Tommy Paul Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both matches came in hardcourt competitions with Paul winning their second round match at the Canadian Masters last season and Alcaraz responding with a victory in Miami earlier this year.

Alcaraz Stumbles to a Win Over Hurkacz

After having clinched a straight-set win in the second round over Ben Shelton, Alcaraz looked like he had disposed off any rustiness that might have come with being away from competitive tennis for a while.

Hubert Hurkacz, his third round opponent, however had other ideas.

The Polish number one broke Alcaraz in the second game of the encounter and saved two break-points to clinch the opening set. In the second, Hurkacz overpowered Alcaraz’s serve in the first game this time but was broken back and in the tie-breaker that followed, the world number one grabbed the equaliser with ease.

Things should have gotten easier for Alcaraz from then on, especially as he took a 5-2 lead with two breaks of serves. In the following game, Alcaraz had two match-points off his own serve that he missed and was then broken to love by Hurkacz in the 10th game.

With the match levelled now, Alcaraz would have been stunned for a while but he showed none of that in the tie-breaker that followed in which he raced away to a 6-1 lead before winning it 73.

He will hope to do a lot better against Paul in the quarterfinals.

Paul Routs Giron

Having defeated Argentines Diego Schwartzman and Francisco Cerundolo in hard-fought three-setters in the first couple of rounds, Paul did not waste too much time to go past fellow Marcos Giron in the third.

Paul needed an hour and a half to clinch a 6-3, 6-2 win over Giron and march into his second successive quarterfinal at the Canadian Masters. Last year, he had defeated Vasek Pospisil here before edging out Alcaraz and overcoming Marin Cilic to make it to the last eight stage.

The world number 14 saved seven of the eight break-points against him as he overcame an early break of serve from Giron in which he had levelled things off. Paul saved three break-points at 2-2 in the first set before breaking Giron again and racing away with the set.

In the second set, things were easier for Paul as he went on to win four successive games to wrap up the encounter.

Can he dish out a repeat of last year’s performance against Alcaraz?
