De Minaur Upsets Medvedev

Alex De Minaur reached his maiden ATP Masters 1000 semifinal on Friday following a gritty win over second seed Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinal.

De Minaur made multiple comebacks during match to upset the world no. 3, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 in a two hour and four minute contest.

The Australian conceded a break in the sixth game of the first set and then found himself 2-5 down a game later, but he fought back to force the tiebreak, only to find himself trailing 1-5 in the tiebreak.

He pulled a couple of minibreaks back to stay in the set, and then denied Medvedev two set point opportunities before converting his only set point to take the tiebreak and the first set.

In the second, Medvedev began with a break, De Minaur drew level at 2-2, but the Russian restored the lead with an immediate break. He was leading the set 2-4, but once again couldn’t close out the set as the determined Aussie fought back with a double break in the later stages to seal the contest.

It was the third seeded player that De Minaur defeated in the tournament. He knocked out 11th seed Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-4 in the first round and eighth seed Taylor Fritz 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 6-1 in the third round.

Gabriel Diallo is the only unseeded player that De Minaur beat in straight set sin round 2.

De Minaur, who reached the final of the Los Cabos Open last week, is a win away from reaching back-to-back finals. He had also featured in two more finals this year, clinching his seventh ATP title with a win in Acapulco and finishing runner-up in Eastbourne. Can he reach his fourth final of the season and 14th overall on Saturday?

Davidovich Fokina Eases Past McDonald

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is one win away from reaching a second Masters final, after he knocked out American Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The Spaniard, who was a runner-up at the Monte-Carlo Masters last year, needed an hour and 37 minutes to dispatch McDonald and reach a second Masters semifinal.

The 24-year-old saved 6 of 8 break points and converted 5 of 9 to beat the American 6-4, 6-2. It turned out to be a much easier contest than his three-hour-plus third round win over third seed Casper Ruud on Thursday. Davidovich Fokina had won that contest 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

Davidovich Fokina had also beaten the 2017 champion and 13th seed Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in the second round after trouncing JJ Wolf 6-0, 6-2 in the first round.

This will be the Spaniard’s first semifinal of the season, can he keep his winning momentum intact?

De Minaur v Davidovich Fokina Prediction and Tip

Both players have beaten some top opponents in the tournament to keep their chances alive. It will be a close contest between the two. De Minaur, however, has been in top form throughout the season.
