Sinner Holds Off Monfils

World no. 8 Jannik Sinner reached his fourth Masters 1000 semifinal of the season with a three set win over a resurgent Gael Monfils.

The Italian withstood 19 aces from the Frenchman before scoring a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory. Sinner won 82% points on his first serve and did not face a break point in the first and the third sets, while he got a break in each of those two sets. Monfils was dominant in the second set, and had converted both his break points to force the decider.

This was the seventh seed Sinner’s second win of the tournament. After receiving a first round bye, he had beaten Matteo Berrettini 6-4, 6-3 in the second round before getting a walkover against Andy Murray in the round of 16.

The win improved Sinner to 39-11 in 2023. He is chasing a fourth final of the season. While he won the title in Montpellier, he finished runner-up in Rotterdam and Miami.

Paul Stuns Alcaraz

For the second consecutive year, Tommy Paul has knocked Carlos Alcaraz out of the Canadian Open. Last year, the American defeated the Spaniard in the round fo 32, but this year, he has beaten the world no. 1 in the quarterfinal.

Ranked no. 14th in the world, Paul needed two hours and 21 minutes to beat the Spaniard 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach his first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal. Paul got broken just twice in the match, while he converted 4 of 10 break points and won 21 of 27 net points in a dominant performance.

It was Paul’s first win against a world no. 1 and an eighth against a top 10 player.

A semifinalist at the Australian Open this season, Paul reached two ATP finals this year, but he couldn’t add to his Stockholm title that he won in 2021. The 26-year-old, who is currently sitting on a career high ranking, finished runner-up to Alex de Minaur in Acapulco and to Francisco Cerundolo in Eastbourne. He will now be looking to reach a fourth ATP final on Saturday.

Paul began his Toronto campaign with three set wins over two Argentines, Diego Schwartzmann and Francisco Cerundolo, respectively. He then ousted compatriot Marcos Giron 6-3, 6-2 in the third round, before knocking out the top seed.

Sinner v Paul Prediction and Tip

Both players have been consistent this season, and both will be eager to keep the rhythm going. Paul’s looked the better player so far in the tournament, having got four wins, one of them against the world number one. He will be high on confidence, but Sinner is better equipped to handle the pressure of a semifinal or final and that should play to his advantage.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sinner to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 4/5
