Stan Wawrinka v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

They played once before and Wawrinka won that match. Happened last year in Basel with the score being 6-4 5-7 6-4.

Wawrinka Eyeing Good Run

Stan Wawrinka hasn’t played since his amazing run in Umag and this will be his first match back on the US hard courts. The last time we saw him, Wawrinka was turning back the clock on clay making his way to the Umag final though he didn’t end up with the trophy as Alexei Popyrin won 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4.

The Swiss veteran has been quite impressive this year proving that he’s not really for retirement yet. He’s been fairly healthy with a 22-15 record and 4-3 on hard. These faster courts are a mixed bag for him generally. On one hand, he can use his serve and strong baseline game to his advantage.

On another note, players can do the same to him as he doesn’t move as he once did. For the most part, he does generally well and as long as his serve works well he’ll be a danger.

Nakashima is a player he defeated before and he might just again. It’s going to be tough, likely in three sets but don’t question Warinka’s motivation. There is plenty of that left.

Nakashima Keeps Struggling

Brandon Nakashima opened the year with some lacklustre showings in Australia and it was only a teaser of what’s to come. Not much came to be honest because his level he’s been pretty poor for most of this year, regardless of the surface.

He’s 10-16 on the year, a far cry from the 41-26 he posted last year. He’s been particularly lacklustre on hard courts with a 6-8 record and that’s strange because he grew up on them. A prototypical US style of play generally works well on these courts but not for Nakashima this year.

His Washington experience was solid as he won a match beating Aleksandar Vukic 7-6(5) 7-6(9) but then lost to Andy Murray 6-7(5) 4-6. Toronto wasn’t very good either as he was beaten by Jiri Lehecka 5-7 6-3 6-7(2).

He’s not dreadful but he’s not winning matches either. It remains to be seen whether things turn around but this will be another tough matchup for him. He’ll need some of his best tennis to overcome what I assume will be a very motivated Wawrinka.

Wawrinka v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Brandon Nakashima will have a shot to win this match but he might need to play some tiebreak to get it. I don’t see this going any way other than in two or three very close sets so my pick is the over.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Wawrinka to win: 5/6
