Karolina Pliskova v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head

Pliskova and Ostapeko have met nine times at Tour level and it is the Czech who edged the head-to-head 5-4. Their only meeting of 2023 so far was won by the Latvian in straight sets in the first round of Adelaide in January.

Pliskova Stopped By Swiatek in Montreal

Karolina Pliskova snapped her recent losing streak of three matches by beating China’s Zhu Lin in the first round of the Canadian Open, overcoming a mid-match blip to win in three sets.

Victory was a welcome relief for Pliskova who recently parted ways with her coach Sascha Bajin for a second time at a critical stretch in her season.

Pliskova threw some light on their partnership admitting it was nothing personal, but just that things didn’t work out as she envisaged and now at 31, she isn’t getting any younger.

However, the feel-good factor after winning for the first time in over a month didn’t last long as Pliskova lost to Iga Swiatek for the second time this season in the subsequent round.

Although her ranking didn’t take a massive hit, she’ll need to find form in Cincinnati. Pliskova has quarterfinal points to protect at the US Open, failure to which she could exit the Top 30.

Ostapenko Stunned By Brady

Jelena Ostapenko was given a reality check at the start of her North American hard-court swing as she fell to a shock 6-7 6-0 6-7 defeat to returning American Jennifer Brady.

Ostapenko wasted two set points in the first set which she lost in a tiebreak, and then blew a 4-1 lead in the third set and had multiple match points to seal the match, but still came up short, losing 10-8 in the final set tiebreak in a match that lasted two hours and 33 minutes.

The Latvian is staring at a third successive defeat on the trot here unless she can overpower Pliskova. Ostapenko is 12-9 on hard courts but she hasn’t been as formidable in other tournaments as she was back at the Australian Open in January.

In fact, outside the year’s first Grand Slam, Ostapenko has won back-to-back matches in two out of seven hard-court tournaments this season.

Pliskova v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko has been the better player this year, albeit marginally. It’s a close call as neither player has been in great form coming to Cincinnati, but Pliskova at evens might be worth taking considering the court conditions.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/11
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Pliskova to win: 1/1
