Jessica Pegula v Martina Trevisan Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Pegula has won them both. Both these matches came in 2023 with Pegula winning at the United Cup and Madrid Open.

Pegula in Top Gear after Montreal Triumph

For a player so highly rated, Pegula had won just two WTA titles in her career before the start of the Canadian Open. And while she was 21-7 in hardcourt competitions this season, she would have liked to have something under her belt for 2023 too.

That’s exactly what happened in Montreal when Pegula not only went on to win the WTA 1000 title there but also did that in fine style.

For starters, the kind of opposition she faced and won against would have made the victory sweeter. Pegula defeated Cori Gauff in the quarterfinals and then stunned the world number one Iga Swiatek in the semifinal.

And then in the final, facing an in-form Liudmilla Samsonova, Pegula demolished her opponent 6-1, 6-0 to lift the trophy.

Now with a first round bye in this tournament, Pegula will hope to make it through deep in the Cincinnati Open as well, coming off a quarterfinal appearance here last season.

Trevisan Surprises Pera

Trevisan needed to come through the qualifiers to seal her main draw spot and she made it to the second round of this competition for the first time in her career by overcoming Bernarda Pera in her opener.

In a match lasting an hour and 48 minutes, Trevisan overcame the loss of the first set to register a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Pera and seal her second round berth.

The world number 63 was broken twice in the match, both of which came in the first set but she retaliated with three breaks of serves in the second set and two in the third to clinch the win.

This was Trevisan’s first main draw match since she had surprised the world by reaching the quarterfinal at the Miami Open. Why surprise?

Because Trevisan is a clay-courter and hasn’t had a lot of good results in hardcourt competitions to her name. Can she now put up any kind of a fight against the in-form Pegula?

Pegula v Trevisan Prediction and Tip

This should not just be a win for Pegula but also a straight-set one with the American dropping not more than six games in total.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Pegula to win in straight sets: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
