Rybakina Returns after Montreal Semis

Rybakina has continued to improve throughout the season as she continues to exhibit the kind of consistency that will keep her in a good stead in the times to come.

The world number four, who has the Indian Wells Open and Italian Open titles under her belt this season, made the quarterfinal at Wimbledon. And she then returned to hardcourt tennis with a semifinal appearance at the Montreal Open.

While she lost to Liudmilla Samsonova in three sets in that round, Rybakina has shown enough quality in recent times to go into the year’s final Grand Slam as one of the players to watch out.

Before that, Rybakina will have a tricky opening encounter here to navigate through but she will be a heavy favourite here.

Ostapenko Overcomes Pliskova

Despite starting out as a 4/6 favourite in their first round match, Ostapenko looked like she was in a big strife against Karolina Pliskova. The first set had been easily lost and Ostapenko’s serving had taken a major battering with the Latvian having won just 13 of the 32 points on serve.

What changed in the second set was Ostapenko’s first serves which improved from 39% to 63% and then stabilised to above 50% in the third set. It also allowed her a greater stab at winning points on her own serve.

On the other hand, Pliskova began to struggle with her serving, losing it twice in a row to go 1-4 down. While Ostapenko lost her serve once more in the second set, and thrice in the third set, she always held the upper hand to come through 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and reach the second round for the third time in a row in Cincinnati.

In doing so, the Australian Open quarterfinalist also went 13-9 on win-loss in hardcourt competitions for the season and will now hope to use her past record against Rybakina to surprise her opponent.
