Carlos Alcaraz v Tommy Paul Head to Head

There have been three previous meetings between these two players and Paul leads the head to head 2-1. This includes a win for Paul at the Canadian Open last week in the quarterfinal round.

Alcaraz Struggles Past Thompson

In a second round match that was affected by rain and chilly weather, Alcaraz took his time to get going against Jordan Thompson and was finally stretched to three sets before he could come through.

The world number one, who was sent packing in the quarterfinal last week at the Canadian Masters, needed two hours and 48 minutes to edge out his Aussie opponent.

In a tough first set, Alcaraz squandered 10 of the 12 break-points he got – another indicator how things got so tough for him. In fact at one stage he was 2-4 down in that set but came back to break his opponent in the seventh game and then again in the 11th to clinch the set.

Thompson fought back to take a 4-2 lead and while he failed to serve it out at 5-3, he broke a shocked Alcaraz again in the 10th game to level the proceedings.

Alcaraz was quick off the blocks in the decider though, taking a 2-0 lead and he lost just one point on serve in the entire set. He broke his opponent once again to close out the win.

The Spaniard will know he needs to do a lot better than this come the third round.

Paul Dispels the Humbert Threat

Coming off a semifinal appearance at the Canadian Masters last week and a tough opening round win over Miomir Kecmanovic here in Cincinnati, Paul won another round in straight sets to set up his second meeting with Alcaraz in successive weeks.

Paul was on court for an hour and 38 minutes in which he won 6-1, 7-6 (4) to march on.

The first set was a bit of a walkover from Humbert as he won just three points on Paul’s serve while getting broken three times too. It was in the second that Humbert fought back but it became a case of too little, too late as Paul overcame a late break of serve to win the set into a tie-breaker.

In doing so, Paul registered his 22nd win in a hardcourt match this season to go with just eight defeats. There isn’t too much doubt he will enter his match against the Spaniard here with a supreme amount of confidence.

Alcaraz v Paul Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz starts off a favourite but a wary one at that. We think if the conditions aren’t too off the mark then Alcaraz would have found out a way to get past Paul and might also do that in two.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win: 2/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win in straight sets: 1/1
