It’s been a memorable season for Safiullin especially because of what he did at Wimbledon. Having started featuring in Grand Slam tennis since 2020, Safiullin had played seven majors in the lead-up to the 2023 Wimbledon.
At only two of them, Safiullin had reached the second round but never gotten to the third round at either.
All of a sudden, in a surprising turn of events, the Russian overcame the likes of Roberto Bautista-Agut and Denis Shapovalov to enter the quarterfinal at Wimbledon earlier this year. He went down to Jannik Sinner but even there it took his top-10 opponent four sets to come through.
Which is why it was a bit of a surprise that Safiullin lost his opener at the Cincinnati Masters but he enters this tournament with a reasonable chance of going deep.

Cerundolo in First Hardcourt Match of the Season
Such is Cerundolo’s love and preference for clay, he has featured in 52 matches this year across all levels and qualifiers and 50 of them have come on red dirt. In the only other two matches, Cerundolo lost in the qualifiers at Eastbourne and the first round at Wimbledon.
In short, Cerundolo hasn’t played in a hardcourt competition even on the lower circuits.
And this isn’t for the first time either.
Even in 2021 Cerundolo had opted not to feature in hardcourt tournaments, as was the case in 2019 too.
When he has participated in such tournaments, Cerundolo’s record isn’t great either which makes this potentially a bit of a one-sided encounter. Can he make things difficult for Safiullin at least?
