Michelsen in Solid Form This Season

It’s still early days in Michelsen’s career but the 18-year-old has been making some solid strides already. At the start of this season, he was ranked outside the top 600 but come this competition in August, he has improved drastically and is currently 138th in the world.

That has been down to his form on the lower circuits with Michelsen having won a title at the Futures level and then another at the Challenger circuit.

And if one thought things couldn’t get better this quickly for Michelsen, the American went on to make it to the final of the Newport Open in July.

Since then he has featured at the Atlanta Open and the Stanford Challenger but done nothing of note. That, however, shouldn’t deter him too much as he looks to find his way past a player who has been known to do well on clay but has struggled elsewhere.

Varillas Gets Going on Clay Alone

It’s not just that Varillas wins more matches on clay than any other surface. He is one of those dirtballers who has opted out of a plethora of tournaments outside of clay and this can be seen from his overall record.

Having played over 650 matches in his career at all levels of the sport combined, only 12% of those have come outside of clay.

Take the case of this season alone. It’s not as if Varillas has changed tack as his career has gone along with the Peruvian playing a mere six matches on non-clay surfaces to go with 35 on it.

So while Varillas has done well to make it to the fourth round at the French Open and the quarterfinal of the Gstaad Open, it doesn’t matter too much as he shifts to the North American hardcourt season.

The last time he did play on such a surface was at the Miami Masters where he was bundled out in the first round. Expect something similar here.

  • Low Risk Tip: Michelsen to win: 2/5 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Michelsen to win in straight sets: 1/1 (with bet365)
