Tatjana Maria v Varvara Gracheva Head to Head
Their only previous meeting came in the Merida Open played earlier this year and Gracheva won that in three sets.

With the Cincinnati Open being played in the USA, it was a bit of a surprise that Maria opted to feature in the Barranquilla Open, a WTA 125 competition.
And while she went on to win the title without the loss of a set, one wonders what was the rationale behind that in the lead-up to the US Open. Especially because Maria had participated in the Warsaw Open a few weeks ago and made the semifinals – which would have given her a reasonable amount of practice.
Maria will now participate in this tournament on the back of a 19-10 win-loss record in hardcourt competitions this season which includes a title win in an ITF tournament in Pune.
She would like to do a lot better than what was the case in Merida, Monterrey, Indian Wells and Miami in the February-March period where she won just two of the six matches she played in those hardcourt competitions.

Gracheva Upsets Wozniacki at Cincinnati
Having lost in the first round of the Canadian Open, Gracheva then fell in the qualifiers of the Cincinnati Open. She then made the main draw of that tournament as a lucky loser before routing Caroline Wozniacki in the first round there despite starting out a 13/10 (with bet365) underdog in that one.
While Daria Kasatkina ended her run in Cincinnati in the second round, Gracheva would have garnered some confidence from there with the Frenchwoman having already improved from a season low of 100th in the world to a career-best of 40th.
This turnaround was down to her performances at the Indian Wells Open and in Miami, with Gracheva making the fourth round at both. Earlier she had also entered the final of the Merida Open – her first ever WTA final.
Gracheva will now hope to make a deep run in another USA tournament like she had in the first half of the season and a first round match against a player she has beaten in the past should make for a good chance for her.

Nothing to choose between these two but if one has to go with what Gracheva has done in hardcourt competitions before this, we think she holds the edge in this one.
