Van Assche Has Made Steady Progress

Nineteen-year-old Luca Van Assche has a 7-12 tour level season record in 2023. Before this season, he had played just one match at the highest level and had lost that one.

So, effectively it’s  the first year for the Frenchman at the top level. He has been in good form across levels this year, particularly at the Challenger level, winning the titles in Pau on indoor hard court and Sanremo on clay.

Those two titles helped him break into the top 100 for the first time in his career and he has made steady progress since then, reaching a career high of no. 68 on July 31.

On the tour, Van Assche made his quarterfinal debut in Hamburg, defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina en route.

So how has he fared on hard courts this year? While he is 8-4 on indoor surface, he is yet to win an outdoor hard court match, having lost all four so far. Can he win his first of the season in Winston Salem?

Kwiatkowski Routs Kuznetsov

World no. 497 Thai-Son Kwiatkowski needed just 44 minutes to hand Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing in the second qualifying round on Sunday, which earned him a place in the main draw of a tour level event for the first time in 2023.

Kwiatkowski did not face a single break point in the match. He dropped just six points of his serve and just 10 return points in the entire match, which turned out to be an extremely one-sided affair.

The American had been tested by Dominican player Nick Hardt in the first qualifying round though, before he came out on top with a 7-6, 6-3 victory on Saturday.

This will be Kwiatkowski’s first tour level main draw of the season. He is 0-6 at the highest level over his career.

At the lower level, Kwiatkowski is 18-15 this year, playing most of his tennis on hard court, where he is 9-9. His best runs this year saw him reach two Challenger quarterfinals. He has also won an ITF tournament on clay this year.
