A left hip injury had caused Kudermetova to withdraw from the Berlin Open in June and since then she hasn’t been seen too much on court.
At Wimbledon, Kudermetova made the second round before going down to Marketa Vondrousova – the eventual winner – and then followed it up by featuring in only the Cincinnati Open. That was her first hardcourt competition appearance since the Miami Open where she had lost her opener.
And continuing from that, Kudermetova went down in the first round of the Cincinnati Open too.
More pertinently, the Russian lost to the former world number one and 11/2 underdog (with bet365), Venus Williams in that match. It was Venus’ first win over a top-20 player in years.
What this points to is that Kudermetova is either not fully fit or she isn’t quite match fit and that rustiness is causing her on-court issues. Either ways, this is a good chance to get back into her groove as she takes on a clay-court specialist in round one.

Qualifier Podoroska Has Just One Main Draw Win on Hardcourt
Podoroska’s preference for clay is well-chronicled and that can also be seen from her overall results. She has 15 ITF titles to her name and 12 of them have come on the red dirt.
On the other hand, her struggles in hardcourt competitions can be seen from what she has done this year.
For starters, coming into the qualifiers of this event, Podoroska had played in just five hardcourt competitions in 2023. And she had won just one main draw match, a first round victory at the Australian Open.
Which is why her straight-set rout of Clara Tauson in the second qualifying round of this tournament despite starting out a 9/5 underdog (with bet365) could well be a case of a one-off result going her way.
Despite playing an under-par Kudermetova, it might not be too easy here for Podoroska.
