Angelique Kerber v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

Being two of the most competitive players on the tour, the two ladies have a history going as far as 2012. In the eight times they have met, Azarenka has won on seven occasions and currently holds a 7-1 lead over Kerber.

They last met in the 2016 Miami Open, where Azarenka won in straight sets.

A Tough Match for Kerber

The last few weeks have been quite promising for Kerber but this fixture against Azarenka will certainly elevate the competition.

The German reached the top five once again after reaching the final in the Indian Wells Open, where she lost to Bianca Andreescu. She lost to the same player in the third round of the Miami Open as well.

In addition to this, the reigning Wimbledon champion was also a semifinalist in Doha, where she lost to Elise Mertens. In Monterrey, Kerber has had a rather straight-forward run, defeating Kristina Kucova, Karolina Muchova, and Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets.

As for her losses this year, along with Andreescu, Kerber has also fallen to Danielle Collins and Petra Kvitova. In a scenario like this, Azarenka, who is fairly more formidable than these players, can very well challenge the number one seed.

Azarenka’s First Semifinal in Over a Year

Azarenka spent most of her previous seasons dealing with off-court issues and the subsequent loss of form. In 2018, she returned to the top 100 once again although, her comeback wasn’t that promising.

That year, Miami Open was the only tournament where she reached the semifinal on the tour. Apart from that, she lost mainly in the early rounds.

We witnessed the same struggles this season too, with the Belarusian losing her opening matches in the WTA Auckland and Australian Open. Even in the Sunshine Doubles, she made it as far as the second round.

Things have looked fairly better for her in Monterrey, as she reached the semifinal without dropping a set. She powered past Miyu Kato, Zarina Diyas, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova with a clinical performance.

Kerber v Azarenka Tips & Predictions

Azarenka, on the whole, is more experienced than Kerber given her 20 singles titles in comparison to the German’s 12. She also holds a massive lead in the head to head tally and that kind of psychological advantage is always hard to beat.

However, Kerber has been in a far better form this season that her Belarusian opponent. Her win-loss percetange is much superior than Azarenka’s and that will certainly make things interesting. All in all, this fixture can go either way.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (betway)
