Garbine Muguruza v Magdalena Rybarikova Head to Head

Muguruza currently holds a 4-2 lead over her Slovakian adversary. They last met in the 2017 US Open, where Muguruza won 6-1, 6-1. That win was an exact repeat of that year’s Wimbledon semifinal, with the Spaniard defeating Rybarikova once again.

Muguruza Continues Her Title Defense

Muguruza’s performance in Monterrey has been fairly impressive, with the Spaniard reaching the semifinal for the second time in a row. She defeated Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the opener and then dispatched Margarita Gasparyan.

In the semifinal, she faced Kristina Mladenovic and brushed her aside in an hour and 57 minutes. She won the match 6-1, 7-6(5), with a first service win-rate of 60% and a rather underwhelming break point conversion.

The season so far has been full of glimpses where Muguruza has played some brilliant tennis, reminiscent of her 2017 form. For instance, the number 2 seed reached the quarterfinal in Hua Hin and Indian Wells, losing to Dayana Yastremska and Bianca Andreescu respectively.

At the same time, she has lost in early rounds in Miami, Dubai, and Sydney to more prominent and superior players.

Rybarikova’s Surprising Run

In the four tournaments that Rybarikova has played in so far, she has managed to bag only one victory. That win came in Miami recently against Natalia Vikhlyantseva.

However, she gained a lot of momentum in Monterrey, starting with wins over Misaki Doi, Stefanie Voegele, and Sachia Vickery. In fact, Rybarikova was far more clinical than Muguruza in her quarterfinal match against Vickery.

The Slovakian kept a first-service win rate of 79%, winning all 10 of her service games. The last time Rybarikova had a run like this was in Birmingham last year, where she ultimately lost in the final to Petra Kvitova. Since then, she never made it past the early rounds.

Muguruza v Rybarikova Tips & Predictions

Muguruza will start this match as the favourite to win. She has the momentum, form, and the lead in the head to head. However, Rybarikova has been fairly more efficient than the Spaniard in her matches and that may very well prove to be a crucial factor here.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (betway)
