Matteo Arnaldi didn’t have to play much at the US Open so far as the Italian advanced via the retirement of his opponent Jason Kubler. The Italian did win the opening set, but the Australian ultimately elected to stop play.
It might be very useful because he’ll face a player who played five sets with no rest between the matches. Should this match be as close as their previous one in Madrid earlier this year was, it will come in handy, especially in the latter stages.
Arnaldi is generally a solid fit in New York, loving to play attacking tennis. Unforced errors are a concern for him, but he’s done a pretty solid job of limiting them for much of his career. It’s been a breakout year for him, with a 40-20 record so far.
He’s also 14-11 on hard courts, so he doesn’t have any issues on the surface. Rhytmn might be a concern after not playing a full match.

Fils Survives R1 Thriller
Arthur Fils is in the second round of the US Open, but it came at a cost. It cost him a lot of energy, with the match going to five sets and lasting four hours. The win is important and will give him confidence, but how well can he recover?
He’s fairly young, hasn’t played that much tennis and looks quite formidable on the court. Technically he should be fine, and the upcoming match doesn’t promise to be a very physical one. Arnaldi won’t play long rallies, and Fils will likely use a similar tactic.
He has a good serve that can do a lot of damage and did so against Griekspoor. He had 22 aces in that match along with 62 aces so expect him to try and assert his dominance in rallies.
It’s going to be tough against Arnaldi who plays the same way, but if he manages to he’ll increase his chances to win so expect him to try.

I think this likely goes to four sets and possibly more. The over on 38,5 or similar looks promising but we’ll simply do over 3,5 sets.
