Pegula began her US Open campaign this season with a one-sided result coming her way as she crushed Camila Giorgi in straight sets to move into the second round.
In a match lasting just an hour and 24 minutes, Pegula broke Giorgi four times, having created 15 such opportunities for herself. In return, Pegula faced just one break-point in the encounter and saved it. And even that came in the second game of the opening set, following which Pegula lost just eight points on her own serve.
This follows a title win at the Canadian Open for Pegula, just her second career tournament win in a WTA 1000 tournament.

Tig Shocks Marino
Rebecca Marino would have thought this was easy pickings as she took on an opponent who is ranked 700th in the world. And while Marino had her moments in the match, Tig produced an absolutely gritty, never-say-die approach to come away a winner in two tie-breakers.
In a match lasting two hours and 17 minutes, Tig lost her serve three times but she didn’t lose her hope and clinched a rare second round berth 7-6 (6), 7-6 (1).
To give you a perspective of how shocking that win was, Tig had gone into the encounter at 11/2 odds to complete the victory having last won a main draw encounter in June 2021. Two years and change on, Tig has finally added another victory.
Unfortunately for Tig, she will now be up against a player who is one of the title favourites, making this a way more difficult match to surmount.
