There have been question-marks over a “mystery illness” that is making things difficult for a few of the players at the US Open 2023 and Dominic Thiem was one of three to be afflicted by it.
Down a set in his second round match against Shelton, Thiem was forced to retire from the encounter with what looked to be a worrying illness.
Shelton would have obviously hoped to win it in normal circumstances but he has now managed to make it to the third round at US Open for the first time in his career. In fact till last year, he hadn’t won a main draw match here but he has already overcome Pedro Cachin and benefitted from the Thiem illness.
He now starts off a favourite (4/6 with bet365) against another surprise entrant into the third round and will hope he can emulate his own performances at the Australian Open earlier this year where he had made the quarterfinal.

Karatsev Ends Carballes Baena
Roberto Carballes Baena had entered the US Open knowing he was up against it when he was drawn to take on Holger Rune in his opener. In a first round result that shocked most around the tournament, he managed to kill of the top-10 player’s aspirations with a stunning win.
And yet, he wasn’t quite the favourite going into his second round encounter against Karatsev.
Karatsev, who had himself stunned Jiri Lehecka in the first round – winning it in three easy sets – made it two wins in a row with a four set victory over Carballes Baena.
In a match lasting three hours and 26 minutes, Karatsev clinched a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over his Spaniard opponent to seal his place in the third round here for just the second time in his career.
He now is 6/5 (with bet365) to win this but something says that it could be anyone’s match here.
Shelton v Karatsev Prediction and Tip
Shelton might start off a favourite but there is every chance that we could see a four or five-setter that gets decided by who plays the big points better. Close one in the offing.
