Pera leads 1-0, beating Ostapenko last in Jurmala in 2019 6-2, 6-1.

Ostapenko Battles Past Avanesyan

Jelena Ostapenko hasn’t had the most clinical start to her US Open campaign this week, as she found herself in two three-setters against lesser-ranked opponents.

The first one was against Jasmine Paolini, beating 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 – followed by a 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 win against Elina Avanesyan. Despite fielding a world of experience, the current World No. 21 (a former #5) committed an astonishing 80 unforced errors in round two. What got her through was just as impressive number of winners – 57 to Avanesyan’s 11.

These whirlwind wins put Jelena at 30-16 for the year, on the hunt for her second title of the season.

Her first one came in the Birmingham Classic, beating Barbora Krejcikova in the final. Her other highlights include a semifinal showing in the Italian Open and a quarterfinal at the Australian Open.

It should be noted that Ostapenko has never made it past round three at the Flushing Meadows. Will this be the year she breaks that jinx? Well, she certainly faces a tough task in doing so.

Pera Beats Wang

Bernarda Pera had to work hard to win her second-round bout against Xiyu Wang. In a little over two hours, she won the match 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 – hitting 39 unforced errors and 31 winners in the process.

In the opener, the American impressed greatly by upsetting the 16th seed Veronika Kudermetova 7-5, 6-4.

These wins have put Pera in unchartered territory in New York, as she finds herself competing in round three for the first time in her career here.

Considering her season, this result may come as a bit surprising, but at the same time, it may prove to be her redeeming run.

Bernarda’s record is at 20-21 with a ranking of World No. 73; her noticeable performances include a couple of QF shows in Strasbourg and Hamburg and R16 in the French Open. These results were also followed and preceded by streaks of early-round losses.

Ostapenko v Pera Prediction and Tip

This is an even fixture for the time being, given Ostapenko’s error-prone play and Pera’s newly-found confidence. An upset is on the card here for the 20th seed. Expect a cracking affair.
