Alcaraz Edges Out Evans

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz produced another high quality display as he fended off the 26th seed Dan Evans in four sets on Saturday to move into the fourth round of the US Open.

Playing the first seeded player in the tournament, Alcaraz dropped a set, yet he was in control for most parts of the match as he registered a 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory in three hours and 10 minutes.

The world no. 1 struck 61 winners to just 28 from Evans. He was broken twice in the match, but he converted 6 of 17 break points to knock out the world no. 28 and improve his season record to 56-6.

Alcaraz, who has won six of 12 titles this year including the Wimbledon, is chasing a third Grand Slam title. If he goes on to win the final major of the season, he would become the first player to defend the title since Roger Federer defended the US Open title in 2008.

Alcaraz had begun his campaign against Dominic Koepfer, but the German retired from the contest while trailing 6-2, 3-2. The Spaniard then defeated Lloyd Harris 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round.

Arnaldi Stuns Norrie

Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi pulled off a shock third round win over 16th seed Cameron Norrie, beating the Briton in straight sets.

Making his US Open debut this season, Arnaldi stormed into the second week with a solid performance in the third round. The Italian broke Norrie twice in the opening set and then came back from a break down in the second to break the Briton two more times in the match and build a two-sets-to-love lead.

In the final set, Arnaldi broke Norrie’s very first service game and then protected the lead till the end of the set to score a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

The world no. 61 had never had a taste of Grand Slam tennis before this year. He made it to the second round at Roland Garros and lost his opener at Wimbledon in his first two this year. But a run to the fourth round in teh final major has been his best so far. He got lucky in the opening round, when his opponent Jason Kubler retired while trailing 6-3, 1-0.

The 22-year-old, however, had to work hard for his second round win, needing four hours to battle past Arthur Fils 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-4.

Arnaldi is now 13-9 at the tour level this year and 42-20 across levels. Can he pull off the upset of the tournament in the next round?
