Karolina Muchova v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between these two players and Muchova leads 3-1. All four of them came in hardcourt competitions including one at the 2020 US Open where Muchova won and three this year in which Muchova leads 2-1.

Muchova Overcomes Heat, Wang

It took Muchova three sets to get past Xinyu Wang but in the end she would be happy with her effort as she battled difficult conditions to make it through.

Muchova, who had entered this year’s US Open on the back of successive first round exits at this tournament, did not bat much of an eyelid when she overcame Taylor Townsend, Magdalen Frech and Storm Hunter to reach the fourth round.

And it looked like things were going in the same direction against Wang when she grabbed the first set 6-3 despite getting broken twice there.

Another spate of breaks – six of them – came in the second set, taking the two to five games all at that stage before a resurgent Wang broke a tiring Muchova to level the proceedings.

Lesser mortals could have lost their momentum and fallen apart but Muchova held on and despite the conditions ended her opponent’s journey with two breaks of serves in the decider.

Muchova is is 3/5 with bet365 to win this and replace Maria Sakkari at the eighth spot on the WTA Rankings.

Cirstea Continues Stunning Run

When Cirstea defeated Kayla Day and Anna Kalinskaya in the first two rounds of this US Open, she had gone into those encounters as a huge favourite.

But her wins in the last two rounds have been against heavy favourites and against the run of play.

In her third round match, Cirstea overcame Elena Rybakina in a hard-fought three sets but what was so brilliant to watch was her showing against Belinda Bencic in the fourth round. The match lasted a mere hour and 25 minutes and Cirstea won 6-3, 6-3.

In both those sets, Cirstea broke twice to go 5-0 and 4-1 up respectively and while she was broken back, at no point in the match it looked like she was not the favourite.

And that’s the kind of form you want to take into your first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2009! Yes, Cirstea last made it this far 14 years ago at the French Open and has never entered the semifinal ever. Can she overcome the 7/5 odds on offer with bet365 to overcome Muchova?

Muchova v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Muchova will hold the advantage here and we reckon she will make it through and in two fighting sets given her experience at this stages of competitions and her excellent form.

  • Low Risk Tip: Muchova to win: 8/15 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 4/5 (with bet365)
