Carlos Alcaraz v Alexander Zverev Head to Head

There have been five previous meetings and Zverev leads 3-2. On hardcourt surfaces, this is 2-0 in favour of Zverev but it must be quickly added that all of Zverev’s wins came before Alcaraz shot up on the performance charts last season.

Alcaraz Eases Past Arnaldi

Alcaraz did not have to expend too much energy in his straight-set win over Matteo Arnaldi as he registered a straight-set win in his round four encounter.

Having dropped just one set in the tournament before this – in the third round to Dan Evans – Alcaraz was on court for two hours as he sealed off his quarterfinal berth with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win.

The only time that Alcaraz faced some challenge was in the third set when he went a break down off the very first break-point he faced in the third game of that set. By that time Alcaraz had already taken a two sets to love lead and he followed it up with a break right back which levelled it off at 2-2.

The Spaniard then missed a break-point in the eighth game but broke to love in the 10th to wrap things up.

Alcaraz will now face his first big challenge on his way to his title defence and while he still starts off a favourite with bet365 at 1/2, it will be interesting to see if he can live up to those odds in a hardcourt competition.

Zverev Needs Five Sets against Sinner

Since defeating Aleksandar Vukic in the first round of this tournament, Zverev hasn’t had it easy but he has kept winning. He was stretched to four sets by both Daniel Altmaier and Grigor Dimitrov in rounds two and three respectively but his biggest test came in the fourth round against Jannik Sinner.

Sinner was a favourite coming into the match but Zverev came away a winner as he carved out a five-set win over his sixth-ranked opponent.

In a brutally long match that became the longest of the tournament and finished close to 2 am local time, Zverev overcame exhaustion and a sterling fight from Sinner before winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

With Sinner suffering from cramps in both his legs in the second set and really struggling to move in the third, it was a surprise he actually managed to break Zverev in ninth game of the fourth set to force a decider.

Fortunately for Zverev, he came back to grab an early break in the fifth before wrapping it up after a longish third game in which he staved off a break-point of his own.

The big question now is whether Zverev will have enough time to recover from this encounter and take on the rather fresher and younger Alcaraz in the last eight. He will be a 6/4 (with bet365) to grab a surprise.

Alcaraz v Zverev Prediction and Tip

When asked after his fourth round win what he had to say about his next opponent, Alcaraz, Zverev took a long pause before replying he will first look to recover and then give it his best shot against the current world number one. The trouble is, will his best be enough against a player who crushed him 6-1, 6-2 on his favourite clay court at Madrid earlier this year.

Backing Alcaraz for a win and a reasonably easy one at that.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Alcaraz to win: 1/2 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 38.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
