Veronika Kudermetova v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings here with both players having won one apiece. Kenin won at the 2019 Australian Open while Kudermetova retaliated with a victory earlier this year in Doha.

Kudermetova Struggling for Form in Recent Times

Since having to withdraw from her Berlin Open quarterfinal against fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova because of a hip injury in June, Kudermetova has had a string of poor results. Her ranking has taken a tumble too, with the world number nine at the start of the season having gone down to 18th on the WTA charts at the start of this tournament.

This has been due to her lack of performances on both grass (after Berlin) and hardcourt surfaces, with the Russian winning a mere two of the six matches she has played since her return.

More recently, she was drawn against Bernarda Pera in the first round of the US Open and despite starting out a 1/4 favourite (with bet365), Kudermetova was bundled out in straight sets.

Kudermetova might still be feeling the after-effects of that injury coming into her opening round match here where she is 3/5 (at bet365) to win it. But we do think she has the pedigree to slowly get back to her best and it could well be a matter of when and not if.

Can she kick-start the rest of the season with a resounding win on her San Diego debut?

Kenin Breaks Back into Top 100 Despite Injury

Kenin was to take part in the Washington Open at the start of the North American swing but a quad injury prevented her from participating in it. She went on to miss all the tune-up tournaments before US Open before finally taking to court at the season’s final Grand Slam.

That was her first tournament since Kenin had made the third round at Wimbledon despite starting out as a qualifier and she did well to overcome Ana Bogdan in her opener. That had been her first match in over eight weeks and the win would have given her a lot of confidence.

In the second, however, despite Kenin’s best fighting efforts, she was put to the sword by Daria Kasatkina, who advanced in three sets.

Despite this lack of tennis and positive results, Kenin has managed to break into the top 100 of the rankings – starting out 91st when the new rankings will be released. That might not be a true reflection of a player who has won a Grand Slam in the past but for now, she will hope she can start winning again.

Kenin starts off a second favourite though at 13/10 (with bet365) here.

Kudermetova v Kenin Prediction and Tip

Kudermetova might start off a favourite but it must be quickly added there’s not much to choose between these two players given what has transpired for both of them. Backing a longish encounter.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6 (with bet365)
