Jelena Ostapenko v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

This the first time that the Latvian and her American opponent will be meeting at the highest level.

Ostapenko Looking for Form Ahead of European Season

Top seed for this tournament, Ostapenko is looking for practice on clay and much needed form ahead of the European season where she will be hoping to get back the sort of performance levels that made her the French Open champion in 2017.

In part she can put down her patchy form in 2019 to date down to the wrist injury she incurred in the off-season which hampered her preparations for the current campaign, but she has also struggled with the pressures that come with being a Grand Slam winner, as evidenced by the fact that she has been through several coaches since that win at Roland Garros.

Her best result of the season so far came in Monterrey last week, where she reached the third round before she was beaten by the eventual winner Madison Keys. Here she is playing again on her favourite surface of clay, and, against not the most challenging of fields, she will be hoping for a run deep into the tournament to instill confidence.

Ahn, an American Lucky Loser

Ahn is fortunate to have the chance to play in this match at all, qualifying by virtue of her status as a lucky loser, having lost her final qualifier to Bibiane Schoofs of the Netherlands in straight sets.

The American of Korean descent is more used to the ITF circuit than the senior WTA tour: she has won seven ITF titles but, significantly perhaps, they have all been on hard courts, not the clay of Bogota.

Currently ranked 190 in the world, it has been nearly two years since the last of those ITF titles, and her 2019 form has been indifferent, with her best result coming in the Indian Wells Challenger event, where she reached the third round.

However, the 26-year-old failed to get out of the qualifying tournament in Monterrey.

Ostapenko v Ahn Predictions & Tips

Ostapenko will start as overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/19, whilst Ahn must be considered a rank outsider. If Ostapenko has any serious pretensions about winning this title, this is a match she should win with the absolute minimum of fuss.

Tip: Ostepenko to win in straight sets: 1/2 (Bovada)
