Kenin Edges Out Fernandez

Sofia Kenin held off Leylah Fernandez in a three-set quarterfinal in Guadalajara on Thursday to reach a semifinal for the second week in a row.

The 24-year-old, who ended a nearly three year finals drought last week in San Diego, is a win away from reaching a second final in a row.

Ranked no. 53, Kenin double faulted 14 times in the match and was out-aced 6-15 by the Canadian. However, the American converted 6 of 7 break points and was broken just thrice in the match, as she edged the lefty 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 6-1. This was the first three-setter for Kenin in the tournament.

She had begun her campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Carol Zhao in the first round and had ousted 12th seed Anhelina Kalinina 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). She defeated another seeded player in the third round, beating sixth seed Jeļena Ostapenko 6-4, 7-5.

Kenin is 9-2 since the start of the US Open. Can the five-time tour level champion, who is chasing 9th WTA final, keep the momentum going in the semifinal?

Determined Dolehide Saves Four MPs

Caroline Dolehide is enjoying a great run in Guadalajara and on Thursday the determined American saved four match points before knocking out Martina Trevisan in the quarterfinal.

Dolehide lost the first set and was 0-40 down while trying to stay in the match at 5-6 in the second. But the American refused to surrender. She came back to force the tiebreak, saved another match point, before converting a sixth set point to take the match into the third set.

Dolehide got the solitary break of the final set in the fourth game to complete a 3-6, 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 victory in two hours na 49 minutes.

It was the third time that Dolehide won a three-set contest in the tournament. She had won a three-hour contest against Peyton Stearns in the first round, in which all three sets were decided in the tiebreak.

Dolehide then defeated Sachia Vickery in three sets in the second round. The third round win was the easiest so far for the 25-year-old, as she had handed Ekaterina Alexandrova a 6-1, 6-2 drubbing.

Dolehide is 42-22 across levels this year, but it is the first tome she has reached the semifinals at the tour level. Her previous best this year was a quarterfinal finish in Monterrey.

Kenin v Dolehide Prediction and Tip

Given how Kenin has been playing in recent times, she is the favourite to win this contest. Dolehide is coming off a sapping three-hour affair and that could be a factor in the semifinal. It will be a good contest with Kenin going through.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kenin to win: 1/3 (with bet365)
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 22.5 games in the match: 4/6 (with bet365)
