Roberto Carballes Baena v Sho Shimabukuro Head to Head

Carballes Baena and Shimabukuro have never faced off in a competitive match before this.

Carballes Baena Hoping to Translate Clay Form to Hardcourts

Carballes Baena is another of those clay-court players who struggle on any other surface. And that’s been the story of Carballes Baena’s career too except that in the last tournament he played outside of clay, he had shocked Holger Rune in the very first round.

Since then, he lost in the second round of that tournament – the US Open – and quickly switched over to clay again.

The Spaniard has featured in a couple of Challengers – at Sevilla and Bad Waltersdorf – and while he made the final at the former, he was knocked out in a third set tie-breaker in the first round of the latter.

Carballes Baena now has no option but to try and find himself a win here and one there outside of clay too as we head towards the end of the season. He has a qualifier in the form of Shimabukuro first up that should allow him a chance to carve out a rare victory here as he starts off a 1/2 favourite with bet365.

Shimabukuro Scrapes Through the Qualifiers

While he was an overwhelming favourite in the first qualifier of this event against Saba Purtseladze, Shimabukuro was taken to three sets by his unheralded opponent.

And then in the second qualifier, Shimabukuro faced up to the more famed Japanese player in Taro Daniel who was a 1/3 favourite going into it.

Shimabukuro grabbed the first set, missed a match-point in the second set, saved one in the decider before clinching the encounter in a three-setter that had lasted three hours and 35 minutes.

What this means is that by qualifying for the main draw, Shimabukuro has managed to climb up four spots on the ATP Rankings to 144th in the world. And he will now be up against a player more known for his performances on clay.

Having said that, it also needs to be said that Shimabukuro has had back to back three-setters under his belt and will be playing his third match in as many days. That won’t make things any easier for him.

Shimbabukuro is 9/5 with bet365 to win this.

Carballes Baena v Shimabukuro Prediction and Tip

Backing Carballes Baena to edge past his opponent here but not before the Japanese player has given him a fight. Might even see a third set.
