Amanda Anisimova v Varvara Lepchenko Head to Head

This will be the first time that the American teenager and her country woman, 15 years her senior, have met.

Anisimova Eyeing her First Quarter-Final of 2019

Anisimova, the youngest player in the world’s top 100, and seeded six for this tournament, has already set records this year with her run to the fourth round in Melbourne, making her the youngest player in the 21st century so far to get that far in a major.

Now she has a very good chance of reaching her first quarter final of the year, after overcoming a test in her first round match against the experienced German Sabine Lisicki.

Anisimova lost the first set before levelling in the second, and, with both players struggling to hold serve in the third set decider, she held her nerve and reeled off four games in a row to clinch the match. That experience will stand her in good stead for her match against Lepchenko.

Lepchenko, Hardly Any Form

Born in Uzbekistan, Lepchenko has been a professional for 18 years, and became a naturalised American in 2007. Once ranked as high as number 19 in the world, she now is down at 151, and it has been more than seven years since the last of her 11 ITF titles.

Alternating between the senior and junior tours, 2019 has been a disappointing year for her so far. On the WTA tour her best result came in Melbourne, where she battled through three rounds of qualifying, only to be knocked out by Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyankova in the first round of the main draw.

However, she failed to qualify in Brisbane, Doha and Indian Wells and suffered a first round exit in Charleston, Meanwhile, on the ITF Challenger tour she has failed to progress beyond the second round in any tournament.

However, she did beat Bulgaria’s Elisa Kostova in her first match here which will give her a modicum of encouragement.

Anisimova v Lepchenko Predictions & Tips

Anisimova is the heavy odds-on favourite to win this match at 6/17, whilst Lepchenko is priced at 27/11. The teenager may lack experience in the biggest tournaments, but should have too much for an opponent whose best days seem long behind her.

Tip: Anisimova to win in straight sets: 17/20 (Unibet)
