Reilly Opelka v Casper Ruud Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between two of the up and coming men of the sport.

Opelka Continues to Progress in 2019

21-year old Opelka enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2018, winning three Challenger Tour titles, on the clay of Bordeaux in May, and then in Knoxsville and Champaign, Illinois, in November. He then continued that form into the Australian Open, where he caused a major upset, knocking out John Isner in the first round.

Better though was to come the following month in New York where he won his first senior ATP title. Unseeded for the event, he came through four tough rounds and beat top seed Isner again, before overcoming Canada’s Braydon Schnur in the final.

Results since then have not quite matched that level. He was beaten by Juan Martin del Potro in Delray Beach, and Leonardo Mayer in the first round in Indian Wells. However, he came through qualifying in Miami, and got to the third round before succumbing to Daniil Medvedev.

Ruud Enjoying a Fine Year So Far

Ruud, the former junior world number one, has also been enjoying a fine year so far. Although he failed to qualify for Melbourne, on the clay courts of the Rio Open he got to the quarter-finals, beating the fifth seed Joao Sousa along the way.

A week later in Sao Paulo, he went one better, enjoying a run to the semi-finals, and again beating Sousa, who was top seed for that event, in the course of his progress.

Those wins helped propel him into the world’s top 100 for the first time. He was beaten by Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round in Miami, but got his week in Houston off to a good start by beating Bolivia’s Hugo Dellien in the first round.

Opelka v Ruud Predictions & Tips

This is a very hard match to call, at least as far as the bookmakers are concerned. They have Opelka slight odds-on favourite for this match at 10/11, whilst Ruud is available at even money. Very much a battle between two men who are in the ascendancy, it may well go to three sets, with Opelka, with home court advantage, perhaps just edging it.

Tip: Opelka to win in three sets: 10/3 (Bovada)
