Shnaider More Convincing in the Second Round

Teenager Shnaider has reached her second ATP quarter-final, having gone one stage better on the clay of Hamburg two months ago.

In the first round in Ningbo, she had beaten the Chinese world number 123, Zhuoxuan Bai, although it was a match of fluctuating fortunes, Shnaider winning the first set, before allowing herself to be dominated in the second. Fortunately for her she had the presence of mind to regroup and ultimately claim the victory.

She was altogether more convincing, though against Kamilla Rakhimova, the world number 77, in their second round meeting.

Shnaider began well, breaking Rakhimova in her opening service game. Rakhimova did recover the break but parity was short-lived, as she was broken once more, enabling Shnaider to claim the first set.

Two early breaks of serve put Shnaider in control of the second set, and, although one of them was recovered, any hopes that Rakhimova may have entertained of mounting a similar comeback as she had managed in defeating the sixth seed, Arantxa Rus, were quickly snuffed out when she dropped her serve again.

Shniader was left with the task of serving out, which she managed with her second match point.

Kvitova Gets the Benefit of a Walkover

Twice a winner on the main tour this year, in Miami and Berlin, Kvitova will have good memories from some of her previous visits to China. She has won the event in Wuhan on two previous occasions and has also lifted the China Open trophy.

Since, though, reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon, she had just endured an indifferent spell, which saw her fail to won more than a single match at any of the events she entered, including the US Open, where she was beaten by the returning Caroline Wozniacki.

Statistically, she has now ended that run, although it disguises the fact that she had a second round walkover after her prospective opponent, Yulia Putintseva, had been forced to pull out of their match with an injury.

Prior to that, she had beaten the German Anna-Lena Friedsam in the first round, a match which was closely fought in the first set and which needed a tie-break to settle it in favour of the Czech, before she eased to victory in the second.

Shnaider v Kvitova Prediction and Tip

Experience, seeding and a much higher world ranking all point to a Kvitova victory in this match. Shnaider has very little to lose, so can enjoy the experience of playing the second seed.
