Marcos Giron v Dominic Thiem Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and Thiem won both matches.

He won in straight sets on the clay of Madrid in 2021, and in three sets on the indoor hard courts of Giron last year.

Giron Edges Out Veteran After Battle

Giron’s hopes that switching to North American courts would provide a boost to what has been largely an indifferent season had been dashed by a string of disappointing results.

Nor did travelling to China produce a marked change of fortune, as he was beaten in the second round in Chengdu.

Drawn against the veteran Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland in the first round in Astana, he might have expected a battle and that is exactly what he got, in a match that came down to fine margins.

The first set was dominated by serve to the extent that even getting to 30 against the opponent was an achievement in itself. Only a tie-break could separate them, and it was the Swiss who eventually claimed it.

There was little change to the pattern in the second set, with neither man still unable to force a break point. The only difference this time being that it was Giron who won the subsequent tie-break.

And it was more of the same in the third set, neither man willing to give an inch.

Fittingly, the match was decided by another tie-break, and, fortunately for him, Giron emerged on the right side of it. He knows that it could easily have gone the other way.

Thiem Gets the Better of Peruvian

Thiem us still trying to find the form that brought him the US Open title, and saw him reach two other Grand Slam finals before the ankle injury that led to a long lay-off from the sport.

Reaching the final in Kitzbuhel on home soil in July gave hints that he may be on the right track, but it is still a long, hard road back to the top, and there will be setbacks along the way, such as losing in the second round in New York this time.

Playing in his first match since his defeat to Ben Shelton, he was up against the Peruvian world number 67, Juan Pablo Varillas.

An early break gave Thiem the advantage in the first set, and he was able to capitalise on that without being seriously pressured on his own serve.

However, it was the Peruvian who forced the first break in the second set, only for Thiem to immediately recover it.

Both men had further break opportunities after that, and Varillas held a set point, but, in the end, it went to a tie-break.

That developed into a struggle in its own right, with Thiem seeing a match point saved, and Varillas unable to convert two further set points.

It was the Austrian who finally settled it, making his second match point count.

Giron v Thiem Prediction and Tip

Although Thiem has won both their previous matches, he is still not the same player as he was before his injury problems. Giron has had a disappointing season so far, but will want to finish the year strongly, and a good run in Astana will boost his confidence.

It may be a tight match though.
