2020 finalist Adrian Mannarino began his Astana Open campaign with a tough two-set win over compatriot Arthur Runderknech.

Mannarino came back from a break down in the first set, and saved a set point in the final game before taking the opening set in the tiebreak.

It was a relatively easier second set for the sixth seed as he broke early to build a 3-0 lead and then broke again late in the set for a 7-6 (7-4),  6-2 victory in just under two hours.

The French lefty, who is currently ranked no. 34th in the world, has been in great form recently. He reached back-to-back finals in Mallorca and Newport, winning the title in Newport. Recently he reached the quarterfinals in Cincinnati and the third round at the US Open before winning both his matches at the Davis Cup.

Following Wednesday’s win, he improved his season record to 33-20 at the tour level.

A quarterfinalist in Astana last year, the Frenchman will hope to reach an eighth quarterfinal of the season.

Kachmazov Stuns Moutet

World no. 315 Alibek Kachmazov won his first main draw match at the tour level, when he beat Corentin Moutet in the first round of the Astana Open.

The 21-year-old Russian saved 2 of 5 break points and converted 5 of 11 to beat the world no. 119, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in just over two hours.

Kachmazov, who had a 0-3 tour level record before the match, had entered the main draw at the Astana Open with straight sets wins over Fabian Marozsan and Damir Dzhumur in the first and second qualifying rounds respectively.

The Russian is 40-24 across levels this year and 22-11 on hard courts, having mostly featured in lower level tournaments.
