Elena Rybakina v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2022 Wimbledon where Rybakina clinched the third round win on her way to grabbing the title.

Rybakina Returns after US Open Struggle

Rybakina was good enough to win her opener at the US Open and then got a second round walkover from Ajla Tomljanovic. Following this, however, the Kazakh was sent packing in the third round by Sorana Cirstea in three sets.

Since then Rybakina hasn’t played any tennis, making it nearly a month without any competitive play and there are a few question-marks as a result over her form.

In fact, that’s exactly why the 2022 Wimbledon champion is as narrow as 4/6 (with bet365) to win this opening round encounter.

This isn’t to say she hasn’t done well in hardcourt tennis in the past having won the Indian Wells Open title and finished a runner-up at the Miami Open played earlier this year. Rybakina, however, will face up to a challenging opponent in the form of the Asian Games gold medal winner Qinwen who has been on a bit of a roll.

Zheng in Solid Form

Ranked 23rd in the world, Zheng will hope to continue showing the kind of form that she has over over the past few months. Overall this season, she has been 18-10 on hardcourt win-loss and 29-17 across all the surfaces.

Qinwen is also coming off two excellent performances.

First in the US Open, Zheng upset Ons Jabeur on her way to entering the quarterfinals where her campaign was ended by Aryna Sabalenka. In doing so she had put up her best showing at a major.

The Chinese player then participated at the Asian Games where she claimed the gold with a 6-2, 6-4 rout of fellow Chinese woman Lin Zhu in the final.

All in all, she seems to be in fabulous touch and that’s also she starts off 6/5 (with bet365) to win this, a not-too-distant possibility. Can she make things difficult for her opponent.

Rybakina v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Going with the underdog here. Rybakina’s form is unknown having not played in a month and her opponent has been doing well. We also think we might see a three-setter here.
