Wolf Struggling for Consistency

J.J. Wolf will be making his debut at the Shanghai Masters. But the 24-year-old is not in great form at the moment.

Wolf has made four consecutive first round exits in the last four tournaments. That series of defeats started in Toronto and continued in Cincinnati, US Open and Beijing.

At the China Open in Beijing last week, Wolf had won the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw, but was overpowered by Matteo Arnaldi in the opener.

The 24-year-old is 25-22 including qualifiers this year. Among his best results this year were semifinal finishes  in Dallas and Atlanta. Additionally, he also had a few quarterfinal finishes.

Wolf has a career record of 5-11 in Masters 1000 tournaments. Can he improve that in Shanghai?

Cachin Is 1-6 on Hard Courts This Year

Taking on Wolf in the opener is clay court specialist Pedro Cachin. The Argentine, who won his maiden ATP title from his first ever final in Gstaad this year, has a 32-30 season record.

Not surprising is the fact that 31 of his wins this year have come on clay courts.

When it comes to hard courts, Cachin has a 1-6 record this year. He is coming to Shanghai after competing in back-to-back clay court Challengers, Seville and Szczecin, where he reached the round of 16 and the quarterfinals respectively.

Since March, Cachin has played just one match on hard court, when he suffered a first round defeat to Ben Shelton at the US Open.

He will need to adjust his game to hard court in Shanghai, where the 28-year-old will be making his debut.

Overall, Cachin is 4-4 at the Masters level.

Wolf v Cachin Prediction and Tip

Wolf holds the edge in this contest. His game is better suited for hard courts and he has delivered results on the surface this year. Cachin, meanwhile, has struggled on the surface.
