Yosuke Watanuki v Juncheng Shang Head to Head

The pair played each other less than a month ago, also in Shanghai, this time on the Challenger tour.

Asian Games Silver medalist Watanuki

Watanuki finished runner-up in Shanghai having defeated Shang, beaten by the Australian Christopher O’Connell.

It means that the Japanese is still waiting to add to his haul of three Challenger career titles, but he can still look back on his season with some satisfaction, having made his Grand Slam debut as a qualifier in Australia. He beat the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round to record his first win at a major.

He then made his first Masters appearance, again as a qualifier in Miami, and repeated the feat in Madrid.

A slice of luck saw him gain entry to the main draw at Wimbledon as a Lucky Loser, and his subsequent victory over Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland saw him break into the top 100 for the first time in his career.

Since his last visit to Shanghai he has been playing in the Asian Games representing Japan. Seeded second he got to the final but had to be content with a silver medal, after losing in straight sets to the top seeded Zhizhen Zhang of China.

Shang Enters as a Wildcard

Teenager Shang is in line to make his Masters’ debut after being given a wildcard for this event.

Runner-up in the boys’ singles at the US Open two years ago, it has already been a season to remember for the teenager, who, in January, became the youngest player since Carlos Alvarez to qualify for the Australian Open, his maiden Grand Slam appearance.

And, when he beat Oscar Otte of Germany in the first round, he became the first Chinese male player in the modern era to record a singles victory in the tournament.

He would go on to qualify for the French Open as well, although he lost in the first round in Paris.

This is his third successive main draw appearance in China, and he is hoping to improve on his last two matches.

He was beaten in the first round of Zhuhai by the American Mackenzie McDonald, and suffered a similar fate in Beijing, this time at the hands of Yoshito Nishioka, although he did at least take a set off the Japanese player.

Watanuki v Shang Prediction and Tip

Given that the two played each other barely a month ago, and that meeting also took place in Shanghai, then it is difficult to predict anything other than the same outcome.

Watanuki won that match easily, and would expect to do so again.
